Out of State Transfer

(or New to New Mexico)

Get Your New Title Quickly in New Mexico

Have you recently purchased a vehicle from outside of New Mexico or made your residence in the state? In New Mexico, there are several types of vehicles that require a Certificate of Title, including passenger vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, RVs, motor homes, buses, trailers, and more. This title provides proof of ownership for a resident of New Mexico. Please note that only a single title is permitted to be issued and exist for the same vehicle at any given time.

To Ensure Your Titling Process Goes Quickly, You Will Need This Documentation:

  • The original or certified copy of the bill of sale or dealer’s invoice for your vehicle
  • Two proofs of New Mexico residency (Note: this is only required if you don’t have a valid New Mexico driver’s license with your current address)
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license or state-issued ID
  • Proof of liability insurance
  • The vehicle’s current odometer reading
  • Lienholder information
  • Your vehicle (this is required for out-of-state vehicles)

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Inspection

For every vehicle that is being transferred to a New Mexico resident from another state, a vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection is required. This inspection will be performed by one of our certified VIN inspectors when you arrive for your appointment to title your out-of-state vehicle. For this reason, you must bring your out-of-state vehicle with you to your appointment to receive a transferred title.

Does Your Out-of-State Vehicle Have a Lien?

In the instance that your out-of-state vehicle that is currently titled in another state has a lien on it, we must receive the vehicle title from the lien holder. If this is the case, you will need to provide MVD Express with the name and address of the lienholder.
